Biography

Artist Katie Atkinson lives with her husband and two boys in Norfolk, Connecticut.  Fondly known as “the ice box of Connecticut,” this area has been a great inspiration for her work.  After spending her junior year in France, she received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Connecticut and then moved to New York City where she did freelance illustration and worked in the “bullpen” at William Esty Advertising.  Katie returned to Connecticut three years later and pursued a variety of activities in educational publishing, graphic design, elementary and adult art education, Christian education and real estate.

As a child, Katie always loved the art in picture books.  When she began reading to her two young boys, she realized that what she really wanted to do was to have the freedom to paint her own ideas.  Before long a whole new portfolio began to take shape, one that she marketed to a global audience through the Stock Illustration Source at www.images.com.  Over time this was the perfect avenue to see which kind of images had broadest appeal and would sell over and over again.  As she added to the collection, her work began appearing in books, magazines, advertisements, posters, cards and stamps.

With many snowy days spent at home with her children, and seeing the magic of winter through their eyes, she had a constant source of inspiration and ideas. This led to several holiday illustrations which she brought to the National Stationery Show in 2001 where she hooked up with Good Cause Greetings.  Since then she has done over 40 holiday designs, as well as 20 Christmas Seals for the American Lung Association.  Primarily through Good Cause Greetings, her artwork has raised money for many national charitable organizations.  She says, "I am always thinking about who can benefit from my art, what kind of organization can this image raise money for, what kind of image will spread the desire to give to others."

Some of Katie’s favorite themes are world peace,  Christmas, celebrations, healing, and childhood.  She summarizes her working philosophy by saying, “In today’s fast-paced world, we are all searching for peace and simplicity in our lives. It gives me great joy to create an uplifting, positive image that communicates a universal feeling which reaches out and connects with others all around the world.”
